Eagleman Ironman 70.3 Race Report

June 11, 2006

The 2006 Eagleman Ironman 70.3 triathlon was my first race at the 70.3 mile distance. With a few Olympic distance races under my belt, I was a bit nervous to make the jump to the half ironman. Overall, the experience was great and I couldn't have had a better time.

Pre-Race: The pre-race bike racking and packet pick-up was, as usual, very well run by CTA. At one point as we walked through the expo, I said to Brad, "Hey I think that's Natascha Badmann". Sure enough, it was, and she ended up winning the race on Sunday. Not long after that, I said to Brad, "You know the Gatorade commercial where the guy collapses right before the finish? Well, that's him". Sure enough, it was Chris Legh. Oh, and he won the race on Sunday as well.

After dinner on the water at Snapper's we headed back to Easton to my cousin's place. I was pretty exhausted and was trying to stay off my feet as much as possible. We ventured into his basement, which is actually his own personal bike shop. I was aware of my cousin's fascination with cycling, but expected him to be like myself, with a handful of bikes, and just an appreciation for cycling as a hobby. I couldn't have b...

Race for the Cure and CSC Invitational

June 04, 2006

We all know what it's like to train and train for something, then get sidelined at the last minute, leaving you wondering whether or not you should bail out on your goal or try to salvage some of the fitness you've developed in an effort not to feel like your training was for a lost cause. It happened to me last year a week before the Columbia Triathlon. I dropped a rack of computers on my foot and had to have a nail removed. Walking was no fun, let alone running. It happened to me again this year, a week before the Columbia Triathlon (maybe I should stop doing this race). I was hit by a car (blog entry coming soon), breaking my bike and leaving me with significant pain in both wrists.

2 weeks before Liz's first race, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Washington, DC. she had her wisdom teeth taken out, all 4 at once. Still being in possession of my wisdom teeth, which means I'm more wise than she is, I can't really relate to what she would end up going through. The sight of her looking like she has food stuffed in her cheeks for storage and barely being able to talk (that wasn't too bad from my point of view) was enough to make me realize I'm very happy to h...

Mmmm, Strawberries

May 28, 2006

About a year ago Liz started saying, "I want to go fruit picking". I brushed it off thinking that if I waited long enough, her desire to pick fruit in a hot field like a day laborer would eventually wear off. I made it through the summer without having succumbed to the fruit picking requests and even made it through the fall where I thought a pumpkin picking outing was inevitable.

Memorial Day weekend is typically know for BBQ's and massive alcohol consumption. Given the extra day off and the beautiful weather forecast, I filled my weekend will tons of plans in order to maximize my time outside. Memorial Day weekend also marked the opening of my neighborhood pool.

On Sunday, after an early morning run, it became evident that there was an unaccounted for period of time in my afternoon. Upon realizing this, I was caught off guard with the "Let's go fruit picking" line that I had thought faded into oblivion 6 months prior. As much as Liz does for me, I decided I could man up and go fruit picking. I'd deal with the ridicule from my friends later. It wouldn't be hard since their primary responses consisted of little more that, "That's gay".

So of...

WORDS OF WISDOM

  • Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "WOW! What a Ride!"
